Alexander's haiku is lively and at times deceptively light, containing lines that carry with it the staggering weight of conservation and extinction, hope and loss: "grandfather of the hunt/FIERCE and FAST/and favored, forever?" accompanies a full-spread photo of the Malayan tiger, its gaze level with readers'. Not to worry, though—there is a bit of fun to be had, too, from the likes of an impossibly cute doe-eyed Bengal slow loris, poetry that recalls kid-friendly movement (leaps, stomps, howls), and typography that mirrors sound (for "coils of hiss," the letters float up the page). This book is truly amazing. After seeing the PhotoArk exhibit at National Geographic here in DC, it was a given the photos would be extraordinary, and they are... But then with the addition of the Haiku - such a perfect combination with such beautiful messages!
I saw a special on PBS about the photographer, Joel Sartore. How he was going around the world taking pictures of animals in captivity as one day they may be extinct. When I saw this book I had to buy it for my niece. The pictures are gorgeous. We need to save the animals and their habitat so they do not become extinct.
Kwame Alexander has written several books that turn middle school non-readers into readers. I was very pleased to see that he wrote a book about the environment aimed at a younger audience. Truly an innovative approach!
I was expecting a poem an every page to highlight these remarkable photographs. In stead it is but one long poem to animals in general. Loved the photographs. The poem was okay.
This was a gift for a young friend. I read it and love the fact that National Geographic photographers took the photos, as I am an amateur photographer myself.
The whole concept of these books is amazing. I have given Animal Ark at every baby shower and child’s birthday party this past year. It has been a big hit every time.
My Grandchildren love this book! Another beautiful collection of photographs by Joel Sartore.
Wonderful book to help children – and ALL of us – appreciate the diversity of life on this planet and do our individual and collective parts to maintain that diversity. Joel Sartore is a gift to Earth!
