This was the reference book we bought before we visited Monument Valley. The illustrations obviously couldn't match the actual scenery but came close. Writeups in book also helped us appreciate more what we were experiencing. The book now is part of our memorabilia when we feel like reminiscing.
Monument Valley is the quintessential backdrop for John Wayne, Ward Bond, and Harry Carey, Jr, and their Western adventures. I remember that setting from the movies I saw as a youngster, and the panorama which intrigued director John Ford has long been a destination included in my "bucket list." Short of visiting the landscape personally, I find the the photos and anecdotes in "Monument Valley: The Story Behind the Scenery" an arm-chair traveler's delight.
This is a great book for anyone who is planning on visiting Monument Valley. The pictures are outstanding along with all the information. I especially enjoyed the section about how John Ford and the movie industry help put Monument Valley on the map.
