About the Author
Thomas Huhti is a native Cheesehead who wound up studying in China during university (wanderlust has been a familial curse) which ultimately led to a five-year stint traveling the globe and living out of a backpack. With the tent drying in the back of the car and a Brewers game on the radio, Thomas can be found wandering Wisconsin's highways, searching for the next hidden spot to uncover.

I bought this book to help me to some travel research for a photo trip that I was planning. While that trip got postponed, I ended up spending a lot of time with this book just because I discovered so much that I didn't know about Wisconsin. This book is just packed with information and it's all delivered in an extremely interesting and readable way. In fact, I will go out on a limb and say it's one of the best-written travel guides that I've read in a very long time (and I'm a travel writer by profession).The author, Thomas Huhti, obviously knows and loves Wisconsin and I found myself reading about places I'd never heard of before. I don't know if the author had a staff helping him research the text, but he did a fantastic job of research and organization--and I'm not sure it's a job I'd ever welcome taking on. A *lot* of work went into this book. (And no, I don't know the author, lol.) I loved the small reference to the fur trade helping to build cities, and how fishing seems to be such a large part of the state's recreational history.My only disappointment in the book is that other than a small section up front, all of the photos are in black and white. I would love to see a lot more color photography. There are lots of small maps, too, and they are simple and easy to use--clear maps being a rarity in a lot of travel guides.If I was heading to Wisconsin (and I hope I am soon), I'd be thrilled to have this book along. By the way, I find it almost impossible to believe that the publisher has allowed this book to go out of print--perhaps they are planning an update.
My wife and I spent just over a week road tripping throughout Wisconsin, seeing places we haven't seen despite both having lived there before. This book did a wonderful job navigating us to the places which seemed most interesting!
I bought this book for my father who is nearly 84 years old and a life-long Wisconsin resident, as a way to stimulate his imagination about places to see that are close to home. Sure, the handbook provides a lot of obscure facts. As a native of the state, however, some very interesting aspects of the history seem to glossed over. About a decade ago, I used a Moon Handbook when traveling overseas (Bali in particular) and was absolutely amazed the detail all of which was factual as far as I could tell.... cultural, social, and economic facts that even the native population did not know. I can't say the same about this volume. It is a good start, however, and like everyone who loves to hunt for mushrooms or go fishing knows, they aren't going tell you the best places to go. Even if you are family, sometimes.
I bought this for my parents along with a new Garmin GPS unit for their retirement. My mom told me she likes how it's set-up and found ideas for day trips that she didn't know about. I paged through it before I wrapped it up and it did look like a really helpful book. Yes, you can get the same info from the internet, but sometimes you just want a book that you can refer to.Based on my mom's feedback and having paged through it, it seems to be a great book for planning long weekend trips or one day road trips in Wisconsin.
Excellent travel guide book. Gives details on everything you need or want to know about the destination. Moon handbooks gives details and descriptions on food, lodging and attractions for just about every city within the state. Lots of extra information on special events, places to go and things to see. If you want to know a little about the place you are going to before you get there you want to get a Moon Handbook.

This guide was helpful on a trip to Wisconsin. I love that part of the country. We spent some time in Milwaukee and the rest of the time in Madison. I was impressed with both cities. I didn't see enough and would love to go back sometime.
