ARE YOU A COW? [STARRED REVIEW!] Author: Boynton, Sandra Illustrator: Boynton, Sandra Review Issue Date: July 1, 2012 Online Publish Date: June 13, 2012 Publisher:Little Simon/Simon & Schuster Pages: 16 Price ( Hardcover ): $5.99 Publication Date: May 1, 2012 ISBN ( Hardcover ): 978-1-4424-1733-5 Category: Picture Books Classification: Board Books A bossy chicken demands that listeners introduce themselves. A question-and-answer format challenges the toddling audience to identify with various animals. The energetic interrogation opposes questions in conventionally sized type and answers in a teeny-tiny font. “Are you a cow?” “No.” The pattern breaks when hippos lumber into view. “You are not a HIPPO. / You are small. They are big.” A perpetually grinning bear and upside-down chicken prompt negative reactions, and then a penguin appears. “Are you a penguin? You're not? But wait! / You must be YOU! Now isn't that great!” This exuberant call-and-response and mostly repetitive format keep the pages turning with brio. The wacky characters dominate each page with puzzled, endearing expressions, and cross-eyed stares add a further dollop of humor. Boynton has perfected the art of creating developmentally appropriate books for babies that keep their parents engaged too, and this is no exception. Tots will be thrilled at the chance to use one of their favorite two-letter words (“no!”) over and over again. (Board book. 1-3) Kirkus Reviews, July 1, 2012 *STARRED

This is my 8-month-old's favorite book! We got this from the library, with another dozen. It is probably my son's 50th library book. But this one makes him smile so much! Tonight, he was off exploring at bedtime and all I had to do was say "Hey, I'm a chicken" and he immediately scooched over (he can't crawl yet) and he just smiles and smiles (and occasionally chuckles--he doesn't laugh often--this is the only book that has ever made him laugh). We read it every night to start bedtime and I do voices for all the animals and hug him upside down for the chicken. And of course on "You must be you" I give him a hug. I have it memorized, but he loves the pictures and I love the way it makes him react. Of course, we had to buy a copy--couldn't bear to return it!
My dad bought me this book as a joke after our daughter was born because I kept complaining that I felt like a cow with all the post-partum bloating and round the clock pumping and feedings. (Thanks, Dad). It is a cute book. The illustrations are simple and bright, and the book itself is short enough for my now 4 month old to handle. We try to read to her everyday, but she doesn't have a very long attention span yet. She pays attention to the pictures in this book, and I think she will like the different animals and sounds as she grows and starts to understand language.
Bought this book and 3 other Sandra Boynton books (Hippos Go Berserk, Snuggle Puppy, and Doggies) for Christmas gifts for my best friend's 2-year old and my boyfriend's niece who is almost a year old. I think they will be perfect for mom and dad to read to them, and the girls to begin to learn to read as they grow! They are board books-- thick and good quality, that will be easy for tiny hands to hold... or put in their mouth... or whatever... haha. This book is so adorable, sweetly illustrated, and I had fun reading the lines aloud. I can imagine that it will get a lot of giggles... "Are you a cow?!?" "No!!!! giggle giggle giggle". Overall I think this book (and the others) are perfect for toddlers and I will remember them if I have kiddos of my own someday! :)
This is a favorite book among my 16 month to 24 month olds. Why the specific age range? That's just the student range I notice loving this book the most. We make animal sounds, it's predictable, and let's face it people, it's cute! If you have a little one whose favorite word is "no" (come on, we all do), this book is a great way to make them sick of saying it! Or rather, you'll be less crazy for hearing it roughly 10 times in a row. =) You're welcome.
We absolutely LOVE Sandra Boynton books and this one is no exception! Bright, colorful, funny, and entertaining! Our little one picks this one out of all of the others on the shelf. Sturdy board book holds up to drops, bends, bites, and drool very well! A must read for the little ones!
Yet another hit. My daughter is obsessed with animals and this is a great book to add to her collection. Each page asks if you are an animal..e.g. Are you a duck? It gives your child a chance to answer the question and also proves to be pretty entertaining for the young toddler. This book is short and sweet. It's definitely in the top 5 from Sandra Boynton. I can guarantee every young one will love this book.
Fun book with short sentences.love Boynton Books! Also these books are prunted on heavy cardboard that stand up tp a lot of abuse. My toddler not only loves reading these, but sometimes takes them into the bed overnight. I know it makes for a strange cuddle buddy but at least I don't have to worry about whether or not the book is going to survive the night. We've had others that were not so lucky.
My all-time favourite toddler book is Sandra Boynton's Moo, Baa, La La La, but this one comes a close second. Everybody enjoys the humour of three singing pigs saying "La la la," but you will never ever forget the moment your toddler walks up to you holding a book and says "Are you a cow?"How your toddler enjoys this book changes with their development, as well. Sure, some toddlers might be like my older, more mathematical and logical boy, who just memorizes books and finishes the sentences. But kids like my younger model will appreciate this book in many different ways. First, experiencing the surreal humour, but then experimenting with humour by answering "Yes" instead of "no" to each page (or some combination of thereof).
