The Diana Chronicles, by Tina Brown

From Publishers Weekly

Princess Diana was "the best thing to happen" to the British royals "since the restoration of Charles II," concludes Brown in this dishy biography, and the royal family's error was not realizing that. It's tough to pigeonhole a peacock, but Brown, former editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, tries, calling the late Diana a diva, "a siren of subversion" who "even as a small girl... had been dangerous when hurt." Brown shows how Diana excelled at manipulating the media; her in-laws could only stand by helplessly as she captivated the cameras by batting her eyes or lowering them in her trademark "Shy Di" look. So enamored of herself was Diana, according to Brown, that she claimed not to understand why a certain cardiologist preferred his work at the hospital to seeing after her. Brown interviewed more than 250 people, from Mikhail Baryshnikov (who found the late Princess "so much more beautiful than any photographs or TV") to a friend of Diana's late mother, who says that mum disapproved of her daughter's too hasty royal marriage and tried talking her out of it. In the battle of unpleasant revelations made by both sides in the Di-Charles battles, Brown speculates that Squidgy-gate was the product of MI5 bugging the royal phones. Brown gives her book a tabloid-lingo touch and can fall into melodrama (while everyoneo saw Di's life as a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, the author says, it "was becoming more like something out of Hitchcock"), but then, given the nature of the subject matter, a little melodrama is entirely fitting. However, the final portrait of Diana as a heroine who broke free of the royal bonds and changed the monarchy forever will be familiar to most readers. There are few who could delve as successfully into Princess Di's life as the celebrated Tina Brown, who combines her journalistic savvy with the gossip only an insider could know. While she stresses Diana's role in changing the relationship between the press and the House of Windsor, Brown offers plenty of juicy details, "varying from credible to melodramatic to weirdly sitcomlike" (New York Times)-from Diana's sexual relationship (remember Squidgy?) with Charles to her insecurities, her bulimia, the castles, the rivalries. Diana comes off as a bundle of contradictions, which was part of her appeal. If The Diana Chronicles is, in the end, a book partially built on others, it is nonetheless "a trashy (if delicious) tale ... rendered vividly mordant" (Wall Street Journal).Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

I approached this book with a certain disdain, thinking it would be the usual trash about the life of Princess Diana. I wanted some really light reading and ordered it. It's a terrific book and I would go so far as to say that it is actually the best of the "light royal reading" books around. Tina Brown writes very well with succinct and clear prose; the information about Princess Diana's background and family situation was most interesting. What I liked best about this book, however, is that the author really didn't put the blame for the failed marriage on either side, for both people in the marriage were at fault and were not, either one of them, able or willing to change their behavior and compromise. I thought the book was factual, too, about the people with whom the couple associated: friends and family seemed to be realistically portrayed. A good read, and it certainly brought back the extraordinary period of the 1980's!

Very interesting. It does have inaccuracies and the author does have a pompous style clearly designed to bop the reader over the head with how many clever words she knows, but it's an interesting perspective. Note that the book is written from the perspective of a rather bitchy woman writing about a famous and beautiful princess, so I don't think it's always fair or balanced. It's clear that Tina would have loved to be in Diana's shoes. However, Tina is well-connected and has an insight into the world of the Establishment, and the writing is quite engaging. Worth a read but a little biased. For a serious, balanced, well-researched book, read Sally Bedell Smith. However, this book is entertaining

Wow!!! This was some book. If you want to find out what all went on during Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage this is the book to get. I believe this author must have looked under every nook and cranny because there is so much information in it that it is unbelievable! If you want to read about both sides (Charles and Diana) this is the book to get. It also shows you the life that she led once her and Prince Charles had separated and also tells about her death. You sure can empathize for Diana after reading what all she had to go through. She had really loved Prince Charles but he never loved her and that was such a heart breaking thing for her. She was not really appreciated for who she was.

It was the twentieth anniversary of Princess Diana's passing that inspired me to read The Diana Chronicles. It was written about ten years after her death. I'm glad I chose this as my first book about the royals. Most of what Tina Brown relates about Diana's vulnerable yet volatile personality was touching and believable. The book was gossipy where I wanted it to be and it was fair and accurate where it needed to be. It was an easy read, very entertaining and also emotional at the end where Brown describes the accident, and the unforgettable funeral which my family watched at the time. I appreciated the "sequel" chapter where she discusses what happened to the other major characters during the years after Diana's passing. My Kindle edition also ended with some good quality photos.

If only. were the words going thru my mind as I read this book. There were so many times where if only a person had done something else Diana might still be alive. I have read most of the books about her, but this is the best. I think it is because Tina actually met Diana and understands how the Royal family works. I was amused with her description of the housekeeper at Highgrove who she suspected of working there so she could write a book about it. I don't think that was Wendy's idea at first.I enjoyed the last chapters where Tina describes what went on during the inquest in London. She also tells what happened to most of the involved people which was nice to know..

The author has a lot of good contacts and this book contains a lot of info, very well written. The info presented seems impartial and factual, as she discusses the "other" side in a favorable light too (Charles). I finally understood he wasn't a villain as the media would have us believe. Also Prince Philip is more human than I had thought, as evidenced by his caring nature to the boys when Diana died. I can clearly remember the horror of her death in Paris, and it was interesting to read the details behind the scenes. I also learned that her relationship with Dodi was only 6 weeks old and he was a summer fling, her rebound guy from her breakup with Hasnat Khan.

best book on Diana by far. This is my 5th, and final, book on Diana. The others being her bodyguard, her butler, her butler's follow-up book, herself in that Diana sanctioned book and then this book. Her own book was too one-sided, obviously. Her butler far too fawning and I don't believe his story about "her rock" as her bodyguard said that she also called him "her rock" and that she did that with all the people around her. The bodyguard book was very good and seemed much more measured in his opinions of her and Prince Charles, both people having faults. So this is the best book on Diana and I highly recommend it. This book left me with the feeling of what an incredible life she lived and how said she wasn't able to complete her dreams of escaping the suits at Buckingham Palace, though she came so close.

Although there was some interesting new information regarding Diana and Charles's relationship I feel there was too much repetition regarding their families and friends. This may have been a series of articles for Vanity Fair or other magazines and then were all put together as a book. But I feel the book needed editing as it was way too long. But if you like gossip you'll like this book!
