Although the language is a bit dated now, this is a very important book. I believe it is probably one of the first, if not the first books to seriously consider the actions and lives of African Americans in the face of the severe oppression they had to contend with after the civil war.
I would love to be able to rate this book highly. However, the truth is that this book is little more than a relic of its time. If you venture to read this lengthy and dense tome on an incredibly important period of American history, you will unfortunately be struck by two highly conspicuous aspects of this book: (1) time and time again the author quotes sources of obvious bias and holds a single source forth as factual proof without any empirical evidence or any “deep digging†into the historical record, and (2) in many paragraphs the author makes a statement and then very shortly thereafter either contradicts his own statement or provides clues indicating that his statement was false or superficial.This author attempted to deal with a neglected yet highly important part of American history, and for that he should be duly applauded; however, the book unfortunately lacks analytical depth, contextual meaning, and common sense.This is an important book in the evolution of academic thought on this particular subject matter, however by itself this book is neither evolved nor academic, and is of little importance.
