The content of the book is great. There are a lot of interesting ideas about pipe smoking, which was mostly unkown to me beforehand. Plus it has one or two, not life changing, but useful tricks. It's even entertaining sometimes with Hanna's witty prose. However, it's somewhat repetitive, since it's a collection of independent essays, but that's okay.Now to the bad news: my reading experience on the Kindle Paperwhite was bad. It clearly wasn't tested on a small screen device before publishing. There are a LOT of formatting errors, words written together. The table of contents is unreadable in the front of the book. It's a shame, that this remarkable piece of pipe-literature is coming in this amateur and lackluster packaging. For this kind of money, there souldn't be any problems (hell, there are better build ebooks on Amazon for free).Whoever the publisher is, please contract someone, who knows what he/she is doing to fix it.
Interesting, well written articles about pipes and pipe smoking, although Mr. Hanna can be long-winded at times. I also don't agree with some of his opinions, especially when it comes to aging/heating tobacco. However, it's still an entertaining read.
This is a wonderful book and full of much useful information. I use it along with Richard Carleton Hacker's books, "The Ultimate Pipe Book" and "Pipesmoking: A 21st Century Guide".
The first half got 5 stars, the last half lost my interest along with 2 stars.
Enjoyed the book , learned a lot about pipes, enjoyed Fred's writing and meeting him in Baltimore..fun book.
Instead of alienating the readers, as in my experience a lot of "knowers" in many fields such as wine tasting and cigar smoking do, Fred Hanna invites the reader on a journey through his discoveries of the pipe culture. This makes it both interesting and easier to remember for me as a reader. In addition, I feel more welcome to the pipe culture through this journey, rather than if similar information had been presented as a manual of never ending "how-to".I am sincerely impressed by how much information Fred Hanna succeeds to push into my head by the end of my reading sessions with his way of writing and explaining through personal experiences as well as including the experiences of others.This is, probably, one of the very best books about pipe smoking you will ever come across. Read it carefully and you will be rewarded with Fred Hanna's hard earned wisdom in the field of pipes, pipe tobacco and techniques. In addition, reading about how he created his blends of Tobacco for McClelland Tobacco Company is in my opinion an experience in it self.One may argue, as a previous reviewer has, that Fred Hanna is "self-congratulatory". Although I can guess some of the passages the mentioned reviewer is referring to, I do not really agree. Fred Hanna is a widely known pipe knower in the pipe culture, and this is probably because he has a lot of knowledge that he himself earned from experiencing and experimenting. To call Fred Hanna "self-congratulatory" because of this, I in my opinion a bit far fetched. This is his journey and he is taking us with him. Nice of him, I'd say.I recommend this book to novices as well as people who have smoked the pipe for a while. This book will probably be an eye opener for many. As a coffee and cigar lover, moving into another field of aromas and knowledge has been very educating for me, and I am sure many others will feel the same way.
I picked out this book thinking it would add some enjoyment to the "hobby" of pipe smoking and collecting. This is not really a book per se but a collection of already published essays. There were parts of the "book" that I found informative. I just couldn't finish it because the author's overall tone was so off-putting. Fred Hanna is definitely very full of himself. A supreme know-it-all. Argues for the sake of arguing. His greatest accomplishment in life is an article he wrote, that according to him, started a 10 year argument in the pipe smoking community. Blah, blah, blah.Basically this is one self absorbed man's opinion in print form. Don't waste your money. I regret the time wasted slogging through this hoping it was something other than what it is. You can get the same information for free on many websites.
I have to say. Fred got a bigger brain than Rick ... He talks more rationally and less dogmatically ... He is on the healthy side as thinking of the briar vs engineering thing, the air hole topic and so on. this book has more substantial contents comparing to Rick's trips and visits here and there. It could haven been a four star book were not that a great portion of the pictures of his straight grain collection show really wired taste...
