About the Author
Peter Alden, principal author of this series, is a birder, naturalist, author, and lecturer. He has led nature tours to more than 100 countries and is the author of books on North American, Latin American, and African wildlife. Peter organized an event called Biodiversity Day, the first of which took place in his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts.Gil Nelson, regional consultant and author of the habitats, flora, and parks and preserves sections of this guide, is a naturalist, writer, and educator who has contributed articles to many national and regional magazines. He lives in Tallahassee, Florida.

My husband bought us this book right before our move from Texas to North Carolina, hoping it would help us identify some of the wildlife we saw along the way. My 4 year old was fascinated by the book and has spent a lot of time looking through it, asking questions. We've found it very helpful in identifying some of the newer animals to us here in North Carolina (such as the five-lined skink and woodchuck). We ended up needing to buy a more specific book about NC trees to identify the ones in our yard, as this book can only cover so much. But overall, it has been a great addition to our library and something we've used almost daily! Very well presented and organized. Highly recommend!
This is a solid book that needs better organization. Tabs on the pages or color coded sections would have been helpful. Putting small "post its" is a good idea. The pictures are beautiful and it does cover a lot of ground for its short length. Given the breadth of information, the sections are short, with each species description being less than 100 words. This makes it very readable but also obviously creates gaps. My other gripe is that by covering a region (the SE states) there are sections on species we will never see in Arkansas (eg dolphins) and the book skips some species that are common to this area (eg white crappie). On the other hand, it is small and portable with information on most of topics that I can read to my preschool age kids. Bottom line, great introductory book that needs better organization but lacks depth if you are a serious naturalist.
I moved to this region some time ago, and always felt bad that I didn't know more of the names of the flora and fauna that I see on a regular basis. So I thought I'd start with this book. When I got it, I looked up some of the things I hadn't seen until moving here—only to find that they're not in the book! Some of the trees, for instance, that people tell me define the local area don't appear in here at all. So far, I would say that about 75% of what I've looked up in here hasn't been in here.I think the book is far too small to cover so large a region, and therefore doesn't do its job well. I recommend looking elsewhere for a guide (which I need to do now, too!).
We carry this reference book with us when we are trying to identify trees and plants on our tree farm. As others have mentioned, it doesn't go into much detail, but I have bigger guides that don't go into too much more detail. The photographs are very good and make identification easy, for the most part.
Even though I read the other reviews, I thought I would still glean more info from this being a beginner. It seemed as if the other reviewers weren't satisfied because of the breadth of knowledge they already had. Not so. Even at my beginner level, I have found the book to be "broad and not deep" as one reviewer termed it. The coverage of spiders in our warm environment was lacking, only five listed while the dragonfly listings covered multiple pages - I just received the book today, and this is what I have noticed so far. I still do like the book, it will still be handy for quick reference and for a take-along guide on hikes, and I have learned from it already; but it just wasn't exactly what I hoped for in covering our Northern Louisiana wildlife. The glossy pictures are also helpful for me and will be for my children.
Due to its climate and varied terrain, the southeastern United States may have the most varied natural life in the nation. And while it may now be the most populous quarter of the lower 48, the natural world is never far away. The National Audubon Field Guide is an excellent resource to keep close by for those who living and exploring in the southeast.The book is divided into three main sections. The first covers an overview of the climate, the geography, the habitats and ecology of the south. The second covers the plant and animal life. And the third introduces some of the more significant parks and natural areas of the southeast.The first great reason this book is valuable is the extensive color photographs and drawings of the different major types of native animal and plant species. The second great reason this book is valuable is its portability. The weekend hiker or boater, and the home gardener will equally appreciate the relative size of this book, as it can be easily thrown into a backpack for easy reference.The book could do a better job of showing some of the non native plants and animals. Also, the plants and the animals are not indexed, which can make referencing them slower. The final section, which just introduces major parks in the southeast, could have been better with some introductory maps of major hiking and boating areas. That said, this is a fine guidebook that should be useful to anyone in the southeast who enjoys the outdoors.
I have previously purchased one of these guides for New England. As a new resident in a new region, I knew that I would need this and have used it dozens of times since our move. I think that this is a 'must have' for anyone who has even a remote interest in biology.If I had only one complaint, it is that the book covers too large and biodiverse a region, so the guide is seemingly incomplete. I have already found several insects that were not included in the guide.
This book was recommended to me by a friend as a great book for starting nature study here in North Carolina. She recommended getting this book, along with the Peterson First Guide to Caterpillars of North America, and told our nature study group you could identify a lot of things with those two books. She was right! I actually own a LOT of nature guides already, so this one was a bit superfluous, but if I want to minimize what we take on a nature hike, this is one I grab.
