Absolute gold standard stuff by Tom. As a young, full-time youth coach, I get a lot of young teams. Currently U7, U8 Boys, U8 Girls and U11 Boys. This is really about creating a culture of soccer in the kids life, which is the most important things. Not your training sessions, or coaching points, or tournaments/league play. That doesn't matter, but creating a culture where the kids plays outside training session and inside and outside their home, because he's in love with the game, is so important. Educating parents and making sure they create that environment is the most important thing you can do as a coach of young age kids.
How it has taken me so long to finally sit down and read this book is beyond me . This is absolutely probably the best coaching book I have read in all my years of playing and coaching . unheard of Tom before but never really looked into him deeply. But man was I fool, this makes so much sense and can be so easily applied it can defined as tennis but should be common sense. I will now totally look at my coaching differently and look at kids differently also. Cannot recommend this book highly enough 5 stars does not do it justice
I liked this method for introducing soccer to the very young. Having confidence on the ball and being able to use both feet equally is definitely lacking in American soccer today.I’ve played and coached for over 30 years and I’m going to try to implement this method with young children. The main drawback will be to get the patents to commit to continuing every day at home what we do at a weekly session.
This book is excellent, and I highly recommend any coach or parent of a young soccer player to read it. I would also say that you share it with coaches and administrators at your local clubs. Far too many coaches and teams state in their mission statements for 5 and 6 year old players that they are "too young to learn skills" (like some teams in Philadelphia), and Tom's book proves them wrong. I have followed his work on Twitter and implemented it with my son, especially using mini-balls (juggling/skill balls that are size 1), and as a 5 year old, he can do skills that I wasn't taught until I was 12. This has taken his level of enjoyment of the game to higher levels, and I love watching him play and for him to celebrate his new moves and pull backs with his fist pumps and excitement. I truly hope that US Soccer makes this book mandatory to read for ALL clubs, and that they hire Tom to consult US Soccer.
Great read! A must for all parents looking to encourage development early at home. This is the foundation that will support a child's love of the game as they grow older.Amazon: Need to offer the hard copy in the US.
Good thesis but very redundant. One or two chapters would have been enough but that wouldn’t be enough content for a book
Great concept behind the book. But the entire book could have been reduced to 20 pages. In short: leave small balls around the house, start kids very going and parents play a crucial role.
All parents interested in having their son or daughter play soccer should get this book.Also, I feel clubs around the USA should look into this book as well and understand that players under age 7 can be taught basic skills.
